Delifonseca welcome gifted wine maker for Port Tasting Afternoon

One of the most gifted wine makers in the Port industry is heading to Delifonseca Dockside this weekend for a very special tasting event.

On Saturday, October 22 at 2.30pm, David Guimaraens, who represents the sixth generation of Guimaraens to be involved in the Port business, will be leaving his Portuguese vineyards for a special visit the Brunswick restaurant and deli for an afternoon with a difference. Guests are invited to enjoy six of the suppliers’ fantastic tipples, accompanied by paired canapes by Delifonseca’s award-winning chefs.

After completing his schooling in Portugal and England, David spent time gaining hands-on wine making experience in Australia, California and Oregon, before returning to Portugal in 1990 to join the Taylor Fladgate and Fonseca wine making teams, which the deli has stocked for the past 12 years.

Proprietor Candice Fonseca said:

“When we heard that David was coming to the UK, we knew that we had to get him to come and visit us again, and thanks to some last-minute good fortune, we’ve managed to get him to do this tasting especially for our customers. In terms of people within the Port industry, it doesn’t get much better than David as he’s the rockstar of the Port world.

“You’ll be tasting six Ports, including a 2008 vintage, and hearing from the expert himself about how each year’s terroir, weather, viticulture and engineering are combined with expertise and experience to make liquid magic!”

The research and development work carried out under David’s leadership has resulted in new vinification technology, which has radically enhanced the quality of the wines made from the production of the group’s partner grape growers.

David also works closely with the group’s head of viticulture, António Magalhães, one of the Douro’s most respected viticulturists and a world authority on mountain viticulture, in managing and developing the Taylor Fladgate, Fonseca and Croft vineyard estates.

Candice added:

“What David and the team have created there is an award-winning sustainable vineyard model that is set to become the standard for environmentally responsible viticulture in the Douro Valley.

“This is such a unique one-off experience and I’m so glad that we can host it in our expanded restaurant space. That’s exactly the reason we created it – to play home to more special events and tastings like this.”

Delifonseca Dockside was founded back in 2010 on the love of fine food and drink. Its ethos surrounds enjoying food, creating food and supporting farmers and producers who are equally passionate and particular.

Tickets for the event are priced £25 and can be booked by visiting www.delifonseca.co.uk or the Dish Cult restaurant booking portal.
