An Everton-themed charity run returns this weekend and organisers are encouraging Blues to get involved – all while maintaining social distancing.
If You Know Your History is a 5K fun run to raise much-needed funds for the club’s official charity, Everton in the Community.
However, due to ongoing Coronavirus restrictions, the second annual family friendly event will go ahead this Sunday (2 August) in a virtual format. This means that participants can run, jog or walk the 5K distance in their own environment, where they are located, while still adhering to Government guidelines.
In partnership with leading independent race organisers BTR Liverpool, Everton in the Community is urging Blues to take part and support the charity’s fundraising campaign, The People’s Place.
The People’s Place project will see a purpose-built mental health facility developed in the shadows of Goodison Park. The building will provide tailored support to promote positive mental health and deliver support relating to suicide awareness and prevention.
If You Know Your History 5K is now being hosted as part of the BTR virtual run series, so the date for entries has been extended to 31 August.
Many participants will run on the original 2 August event date, however this means that people can take part throughout August and continue raising funds for Everton in the Community.
The inaugural If You Know Your History 5K was staged in Autumn 2019 and attracted 450 participants. Starting from the iconic 1787 Lock-Up Tower, runners then made their way along a 5K route featuring key landmarks from 141 years of Everton Football Club’s rich history, before finishing in Stanley Park, the Blues’ home at one stage in their history.
Last year’s event raised more than £14,000 in sponsorship and donations for The People’s Place. This year, organisers are keen to beat that total and fundraisers also have the chance to win Everton prizes.
Carena Duffy, Fundraising Manager for Everton in the Community, commented:
“If You Know Your History 2019 was a resounding success with Blues from across the area joining us to celebrate the history of our football club, while raising vital awareness and money for The People’s Place.
“Although this year’s run is going to look a little different, the cause remains the same. And as a result of the pandemic, that cause has become even greater. Although we won’t be there as runners cross their own personal finish lines, we will most certainly be with them in spirit.”
Participants are encouraged to fundraise to win Everton prizes. They are encouraged to set up an online sponsorship page through the charity’s official Just Giving portal at www.justgiving.com/evertonfc
Fundraisers will receive a downloadable map of the original event route featuring interesting facts on Everton’s early years in L4; a branded beanie hat; and will be entered into a draw to win a signed Richarlison shirt.
Those who raise £100 or more in sponsorship will also have the chance to win a Zoom call with Everton’ Assistant Manager Duncan Ferguson; £200 voucher to spend in the club shop; or a signed poster of Everton Manager Carlo Ancelotti.
This year’s entry fee has been reduced to £15, which includes a branded race number, bespoke medal, and postage.
BTR Liverpool is the leading independent organisation for creating, managing and delivering headline race events across Liverpool City Region. Its growing portfolio also includes the BTR Liverpool Skyline Half Marathon; BTR Mersey Tunnel 10K; BTR Liverpool Santa Dash; BTR Port Sunlight 5K and 10K; and 52-mile BTR Tour Of Merseyside.
BTR Race Director Alan Rothwell added:
“There’s nothing better than fresh air, getting active and staying healthy, especially during these challenging times. Whether you run, jog or walk, you can support Everton in the Community and The People’s Place campaign – but please adhere to social distancing guidelines.
“We’ve extended the entry deadline until 31 August, and race packs will be posted. As a runner and Everton fan, I’ll also be taking part in the virtual If You Know Your History 5K to show my support for an incredible cause.”
Participants are invited to send organisers BTR a picture with their medal once they have completed their 5K. Images will be included in an online virtual gallery. Pictures should be sent to alan@btrliverpool.com
