Faces behind the Business – David Williams – Independent Liverpool / Baltic Market

December 19, 2020

SERIES ONE – EDITION SIXTEEN

In the sixteenth edition in the Faces behind the Business series we caught up with David Williams, aged 29 Co-founder of both Independent Liverpool & Baltic Market.

Faces behind the Business – David Williams - Independent Liverpool / Baltic Market

When did you first get into the industry?

I suppose when Independent Liverpool started which was 2013! It was only meant to be a little blog to keep me and my best mate Oli something to do after university and here we are, almost 8 years later, somehow still going.

How long have you worked at Independent Liverpool/ Baltic Market and what is your job role?

I’m one of the co-founders of both IL and Baltic Market so been here from the beginning (which might explain why I always look so tired!). IL started January 2013 and Baltic market opened June 2017! My role is more in social media and writing as that’s what I love.

What is Independent Liverpool/ Baltic Market ethos?

Although they’re two completely different businesses and although one is digital and one is physical – they actually have quite similar aims. Independent Liverpool started as a blog to unearth and help people discover hidden gems. A platform to make shopping local easier, better and to be rewarded for doing so. This resulted in a membership card that then led to events and food and drink festivals which led to Baltic Market. Every street food trader we’ve had is local, we have local bands, local beers, wines and drinks. It’s been a stepping stone to help almost 10 traders open their own restaurant and is the city’s first street food market. The ethos is to keep money in Liverpool’s local economy – and have a lot of fun whilst doing so.

What’s the best bit of advice you could give to anyone looking at working in your line of work?

My heart wants to give an inspiring quote and my head wants to say: get a good accountant. You’ll always end up paying more if numbers aren’t your thing. But another thing I’d say is do something that you love. I know, I know – not exactly ground-breaking. About 40% off all Mums have that quote in a frame in their hall. But it’s so very true. If it’s the money you’re looking for – you’ll never be happy. The love and passion of what you’re doing is the only thing that’ll get you through the hard times. And this year has shown us how easy it is for those hard times to hit us all.

What do you love most about Liverpool?

I know it’s quite cliche but it would have to be the people. A city is nothing without people and Liverpool is full of such character and characters. I love the tribal pride people have to the city – and how so many are ambassadors for the city in their own way. I love the strength and resilience the people have of Liverpool have, and continue to show. They always want to be on the right side of history and create a lot of it in the process.

If you could describe your business in 3 words what would they be?

Local. Independent. Liverpool.
