Faces of Liverpool – Dave Downie

What do you love about Liverpool?

I love our city’s variety. You could spend years here and never have the same day twice because of our incredible people. I love the resilience, that aptitude to always know what’s fair and right. When you consider the difficult times we’ve endured over the years and look at everything about it nowadays, it’s absolutely stunning. I have real sympathy for anyone who has an ignorance and negative view of Liverpool, because they really don’t know what they’re missing.

Name one main thing about living in Liverpool that makes you proud?

It has to be our people. I’ve done a lot of travelling over the years and I’ve yet to discover a place where you’ll find an abundance of more friendly, welcoming or helpful people. You could walk around town and make friends within a few hours. We love to talk, communicate and get on with others. It’s a special place for those reasons. I work in Manchester and I’m forever imploring people to come and visit.

If you could describe Liverpool in 3 words what would they be?

Defiant, warm, misunderstood.

Name one place in Liverpool that holds a special place in your heart?

The Radio City tower. Enjoyed the best times of life so far in that building. I spent over a decade working there and fell in love with the best people you could meet who epitomised our city and represented it immaculately. It was also unbeatable for views!

Is there anything on your ‘Bucket List’ to do in Liverpool that your still yet to achieve?

I’ve not been to the top of the Anglican Cathedral or done the posh afternoon tea thing in Panoramic 34. Incredibly I haven’t been to the central library or donee a ghost tour. So quite a lot on my list!

Do you have any tales of Liverpool or claim to fame while in the city?

Welcoming Evander Holyfield up to the Radio City Tower on a very random summer night. Also telling One Direction to stop running around the tower.
