Liverpool’s Lifestyles Leisure Centres to close as part of new Covid restrictions

Liverpool’s Lifestyles Leisure Centres will close from 10.30pm tonight (Tuesday 13 October) as part of the new coronavirus restrictions imposed on the region.

Following the initial lockdown, the Lifestyles team introduced a phased re-opening of four of the city’s leisure centres after the end of lockdown.

Liverpool Aquatics Centre in Wavertree, Garston Leisure Centre, Alsop Leisure Centre in Walton and Ellergreen were all re-opened between August and October, along with shared leisure facilities at Cardinal Heenan School.

However, due to the rise in Covid cases locally and the introduction of the new Very High Level alert for the region, these centres will now have to close to the general public.

The team is awaiting further clarification about outdoor facilities and Liverpool Tennis Centre.

The Lifestyles team is in the process of contacting all clubs and user-groups to inform them of the move.

All memberships will be frozen for November and the team will keep members informed of what will happen beyond this point.

Liverpool City Council will continue to work with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and Public Health colleagues to review the exceptions outlined in the new restrictions.

Liverpool Lifestyles Operations Manager Mark Lancaster said:

“We have taken the decision to close the leisure centres because we recognise this is needed in the fight against the pandemic. We appreciate that this will not be good news for our members but we have to do everything we can to control the spread of the virus.

“Our members have been really co-operative so far and we would like to thank everyone for their continued support.

“The new restrictions have only just been announced and we are still working through the details, so we would ask everyone to continue to bear with us. We will keep everyone involved with Lifestyles updated as more information becomes available.”
