Everyone’s been thinking it now the big man in charge has cast doubt over getting top four.
It’ll be a killer blow to a season which has had the joy sucked out of it ever since after Christmas.
Before Christmas Liverpool were top of the league.
Remember that?
Now Manchester City are about to take back the Premier League trophy and the Reds are battling it out to make sure they don’t finish seventh which would leave them in the Europa conference league next season.
Not even the Europa League.
Grim.
Klopp didn’t fully give up all hope as the German said: “I am not sure there is still a chance but we will try and if there is one, we will be there. For sure.”
So if there is a chance Liverpool according to Klopp will be there.
There was a massive chance for Liverpool a couple of games ago, they should be there, it should be in their hands but summing up this season the chance has been and gone due to two late equalisers from Leeds United and Newcastle Unitedrespectively.
Those two games should have been comfortable victories but like all year the finishing in front of goal has been woeful and the defensive concentration switches off in the closing stages.
The fact the Manchester United game was postponed and pushed back to a further date does mean these players have had a bit of longer rest therefore meaning they should be as ready as ever for the game against Southampton.
In the reverse fixture Ralph Hassenhuttl’s Saints dealt Liverpool a massive blow as they scored in the first minute and supporters watching the game knew that Liverpool just weren’t going to score.
So that was when it hit everyone that this Liverpool team look a shadow of their former selves this season.
Revenge would be quite nice however the game does not have a lot riding on it for both teams.
Liverpool need teams to slip up but even if they do slip up they’ll need them to slip another couple of times and it’s just it it’s not going to happen, only the biggest optimist still has hope realistically.
Meanwhile Southampton are sitting comfortably in 15th.
This isn’t to say winning doesn’t matter of course it does for these players as they will want to be in the Europa League next season because if you remember back to Klopp’s first season the Europa League run was mesmerising.
It was a reminder at the time that Liverpool are European giants, and they will be back.
Next season with supporters screaming behind them they will be looking to give that reminder out again.
Nathaniel Phillips will be back fit for this game which you should see Fabinho back in midfield which is vital so hopefully the players can put on a show for everyone sitting at home who shan’t be sooner rather than later with fans expected back very soon.
When they are back hopefully the real Liverpool will be back as well.
